Have your say about Moreton Bay koalas

Many koalas in the Moreton Bay Region will miss out on habitat protection if the State Government’s draft strategy and mapping is adopted.

The deadline for comments and reviews on the Government’s strategy is 31 January 2020.

Much of Moreton Bay is designated as a Koala Priority Area (KPA) in the Government’s Draft South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy, but the devil is in the detail, and the only koala trees that will get any protection in Moreton Bay will be those located in areas officially mapped as Koala Habitat. Trees outside these areas will not be protected, regardless of their known use by koalas. We know where the koalas are. We live and breathe it every day. There are so many areas where koalas are regularly sighted that have been completely excluded or significantly reduced - including most of Joyner (see screenshots attached showing the new draft mapping (in green), and the statistics showing where the koalas actually are), Warner, Morayfield South and a big section of Redcliffe.

K1To protect Moreton Bay’s koalas it is important that people urge the government to include areas where koalas live now in the official habitat mapping..

The Government says it wants submissions about koala habitat mapping to be lodged by 22 December 2019. The official submission process is geared to meeting the needs of property owners who want to have koala habitat mapping removed from their land.

So we suggest that you send your email submissions about the need for additional areas to be designated as koala habitat to the State Environment Minister with copies to:

If you see a koala on the ground like this, please phone 0401 350 799 immediately for rescue.

After taking this female to the Koala Hospital, we discovered she had been caught previously also on the ground. She had a microchip inserted & was given the name "Sally" before being released.

This time, Sally was found on the ground again & taken to Hospital where they found she had developed cysts on the ovaries (Bursitis) which can be very painful & lead to a very painful death if left alone.

She was found to also have unusually long claws that would have prevented her from climbing tall trees for food. Unfortunately the best thing to do was to put her to sleep so she would not suffer any longer".
